Scientists from MIT and Caltech, along with others around the world, have made the first direct detection of gravitational waves reaching the Earth, using an instrument known as LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). The discovery confirmed Albert Einstein’s prediction from 100 years ago. MIT Professor Emeritus Rainer Weiss PhD ’62 is a co-founder of LIGO.

The Collier Memorial is dedicated to celebrate the life of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. In a shape akin to an open hand, the memorial represents the many connections Collier built with the MIT community, as well as the sense of service he brought to his job. Composed of 32 massive pieces of solid granite, the complex structure is held together primarily through weight and compression. Its open-hand shape provides space for quiet reflection and is described by architect J. Meejin Yoon as a physical representation of strength and connectedness.

For the first time in more than 70 years, the space beneath the dome — the Barker Library reading room, a 75-foot rotunda with an intricate 27-foot skylight, or oculus — has been restored to its original splendor. The dome of the reading-room rotunda is nested inside the 100-foot-wide Great Dome; the two domes converge at the circular oculus, which is set in the center of both. In 1942, the oculus met the wartime fate of many skylights in U.S. cities: It was covered over, to avoid providing an easily identifiable nighttime target for enemy bombers.

Lincoln Laboratory, building on its expertise in sensors and architectures, developed and demonstrated the Lincoln Distributed Disaster Response System, which enables information from airborne platforms, distributed weather stations, GPS-enabled devices, and other sources to be shared by responders at the emergency command centers and by those equipped with ruggedized laptops at the front lines. The system design initially focused on fighting a large-scale fire but is also applicable for any large-scale disaster response.

Architect Steven Holl cites a sea sponge as inspiration for the “porous” design of new residence Simmons Hall, which features view corridors, soaring internal light wells, and more than 5,500 fully operable square windows (a typical single room has nine). The rooms are furnished with modular furniture, also designed by Holl. Oddities within Simmons include elevators and staircases that don’t reach all floors and bulging interior walls.

The landmark Baker House residence hall is reopened following a four-phase renovation. Led by Perry Dean Rogers Architects, associate architects for the original construction, the renovation balances the integrity of Alvar Aalto's design with functional upgrades. All rooms, common areas, wiring and mechanical systems, floors, and roofing are renovated, the original teak windows are replicated, and Aalto's original birch furnishings are restored or replaced with reproductions.

The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) reduces midair collisions by sensing nearby aircraft and issuing an advisory to the pilot. Lincoln Laboratory developed the surveillance technology used by TCAS and built and flight-tested the TCAS prototype. Now mandated on all large transport aircraft, TCAS has been in operation for over a decade and has been credited with preventing several catastrophic accidents.

Lincoln Laboratory utilizes a new generation of digital signal processing chips to develop a compact linear predictive coding (LPC) vocoder small and inexpensive enough for wide distribution. A vocoder analyzes and synthesizes speech using parameters that can be encrypted and transmitted at a much lower bit rate than the original speech waveform. The LPC vocoder is important in the U.S. development of secure voice systems.

Lincoln Laboratory's Moving Target Detector (MTD) achieved a new performance level for the detection of aircraft in the presence of radar clutter, such as ground, weather and birds. It employed an antenna with two fan beams to provide coverage from the immediate vicinity of an airport to a distance of 60 nautical miles. The MTD became the world-recognized standard for Airport Surveillance Radar.

Irwin Shapiro of Lincoln Laboratory publishes preliminary radar measurements confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity. Although Shapiro conceived these radar experiments almost a decade earlier, no radar was sensitive enough to make the proposed measurements until Haystack radar was upgraded in 1966 and could then perform time-of-flight measurements to Venus and Mercury. These measurements are the "fourth test" because Einstein had proposed three experiments that confirmed general relativity to an accuracy of about 10%.

Radar-based lunar studies are performed by Lincoln Laboratory. The use of radar to map the surface of the moon becomes possible when the radar beam is made small enough to discriminate between two points on the surface that would contribute echoes at the same range and Doppler shift. Altitude data is added to the two-dimensional radar reflectivity data by the use of interferometry. In addition, from the strength of radar reflections, it is estimated that the lunar surface has weight-bearing properties similar to that of terrestrial sand.

The 30-story Eastgate tower is completed, offering one- and two-bedroom apartments for students with families. MIT Professor Eduardo Catalano’s design for the reinforced concrete structure includes large glass windows, indoor play and nursery space, and rooftop lounges. One floor of apartments is reserved for Institute visitors, and another is reserved for faculty, but as demand for student housing increases, the faculty apartments are eventually eliminated.

For the first 10 years, the primary role of Haystack is as a planetary astronomy radar, examining topographical characteristics of the lunar and Martian surfaces in support of landing sites for the Apollo lander and the Viking lander, respectively. When ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons over intercontinental ranges entered the arsenals of the United States and the USSR in the late 1950s, the Department of Defense asked Lincoln Laboratory to take on a new challenge—ballistic missile defense. This continuing effort has focused on two key problems: the development of long-range, high-resolution sensors and the design of real-time, robust architectures and their constituent algorithms that provide the capability to identify threatening targets and control the entire engagement.

The Millstone Hill Radar at Lincoln Lab successfully detects the Soviet Sputnik satellite--the first detection of an artificial Earth satellite by active radar. This high-power L-band radar tracks space vehicles and space debris, and plays a key role in the national deep-space surveillance program, providing ~18,000 deep-space satellite tracks per year and coverage for almost all deep-space launches.

The TX-0 computer (transistorized experimental computer 0) is designed, constructed and operated by Lincoln Laboratory to evaluate the use of transistor circuitry and large-scale magnetic-core memory in a high-speed computer. The memory drive currents are provided by a combination of vacuum tubes and transistors that show an advance toward solid-state architecture, making it among the first "almost-all-solid-state" machines.

The four original boilers in MIT’s Central Utilities Plant are removed and replaced. Coal-fired when installed (1915) and later converted to oil in 1933, the old boilers are supplanted by two new boilers able to burn a cleaner fuel: natural gas. The new boilers provide 2.5 times the capacity of the original boilers. They continue in service until the CUP begins operating as a cogeneration facility in 1995.

Learn about the history of the CUP.

MIT opens conjoined six-story residence halls for undergraduates: Burton House and Conner Hall. Originally constructed in 1926 as part of the Riverside hotel and apartments, the renovated buildings offer large common areas, single rooms, and “walk-through” double rooms. As time passes, the residences together become known as Burton-Conner. In 1970, a major renovation transforms Burton-Conner’s singles and doubles into apartment-style suites with kitchens.
