A central law for black holes predicts that the area of their event horizons — the boundary beyond which nothing can ever escape — should never shrink. This law is Hawking’s area theorem, named after physicist Stephen Hawking, who derived the theorem in 1971.Fifty years later, physicists at MIT and elsewhere have now confirmed Hawking’s area theorem for the first time, using observations of gravitational waves. Scientists at MIT, Cardiff University, and elsewhere have observed what may be signs of life in the clouds of Venus. While they have not found direct evidence of living organisms there, if their observation is indeed associated with life, it must be some sort of “aerial” life-form in Venus’ clouds — the only habitable portion of what is otherwise a scorched and inhospitable world.

Using a machine-learning algorithm, MIT researchers have identified a powerful new antibiotic compound. In laboratory tests, the drug killed many of the world’s most problematic disease-causing bacteria, including some strains that are resistant to all known antibiotics. It also cleared infections in two different mouse models. The computer model, which can screen more than a hundred million chemical compounds in a matter of days, is designed to pick out potential antibiotics that kill bacteria using different mechanisms than those of existing drugs.

By exposing mice to a unique combination of light and sound, MIT neuroscientists have shown that they can improve cognitive and memory impairments similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s patients. This noninvasive treatment, which works by inducing brain waves known as gamma oscillations, also greatly reduced the number of amyloid plaques found in the brains of these mice. Plaques were cleared in large swaths of the brain, including areas critical for cognitive functions such as learning and memory.

Discovery marks first cosmic event observed in both gravitational waves and light.

For the first time, scientists have directly detected gravitational waves — ripples in space-time — in addition to light from the spectacular collision of two neutron stars. This marks the first time that a cosmic event has been viewed in both gravitational waves and light. The discovery was made using the U.S.-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO); the Europe-based Virgo detector; and some 70 ground- and space-based observatories. The National Science Foundation-funded LIGO observatories were conceived, constructed, and operated by Caltech and MIT.

More than 1,100 learners finish online course series; 622 pass final exam that offers opportunity to apply for hybrid master’s.

The first-ever cohort in MIT’s inaugural online MicroMasters program — consisting of more than 1,100 learners who completed all five of the online courses in supply chain management — has received its final MicroMasters certificates. Of those learners who opted to take the proctored comprehensive final exam, 622 achieved passing grades, automatically earning a chance to apply for a full master’s degree. Combining credit for the completed online coursework plus one semester of on-campus classes, this “hybrid” master’s is available at MIT or any of several partner institutions.

Noninvasive technique reduces beta amyloid plaques in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease.

Using LED lights flickering at a specific frequency, MIT researchers have shown that they can substantially reduce the beta amyloid plaques seen in Alzheimer’s disease, in the visual cortex of mice. This treatment appears to work by inducing brain waves known as gamma oscillations, which the researchers discovered help the brain suppress beta amyloid production and invigorate cells responsible for destroying the plaques. Further research will be needed to determine if a similar approach could help Alzheimer’s patients, says Li-Huei Tsai, the Picower Professor of Neuroscience, director of MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, and senior author of the study.

The Collier Memorial is dedicated to celebrate the life of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. In a shape akin to an open hand, the memorial represents the many connections Collier built with the MIT community, as well as the sense of service he brought to his job. Composed of 32 massive pieces of solid granite, the complex structure is held together primarily through weight and compression. Its open-hand shape provides space for quiet reflection and is described by architect J. Meejin Yoon as a physical representation of strength and connectedness.

For the first time in more than 70 years, the space beneath the dome — the Barker Library reading room, a 75-foot rotunda with an intricate 27-foot skylight, or oculus — has been restored to its original splendor. The dome of the reading-room rotunda is nested inside the 100-foot-wide Great Dome; the two domes converge at the circular oculus, which is set in the center of both. In 1942, the oculus met the wartime fate of many skylights in U.S. cities: It was covered over, to avoid providing an easily identifiable nighttime target for enemy bombers.

The Ray and Maria Stata Center is completed. Designed by Frank Gehry, the unconventional building features tilting towers, many-angled walls, and whimsical shapes. Its beehive-like interior is equally unconventional, combining an indoor “street” and meandering layout with unprogrammed free-form spaces and laboratory “neighborhoods” to foster spontaneous connections and collaborations among its multidisciplinary occupants.

Architect Steven Holl cites a sea sponge as inspiration for the “porous” design of new residence Simmons Hall, which features view corridors, soaring internal light wells, and more than 5,500 fully operable square windows (a typical single room has nine). The rooms are furnished with modular furniture, also designed by Holl. Oddities within Simmons include elevators and staircases that don’t reach all floors and bulging interior walls.

The landmark Baker House residence hall is reopened following a four-phase renovation. Led by Perry Dean Rogers Architects, associate architects for the original construction, the renovation balances the integrity of Alvar Aalto's design with functional upgrades. All rooms, common areas, wiring and mechanical systems, floors, and roofing are renovated, the original teak windows are replicated, and Aalto's original birch furnishings are restored or replaced with reproductions.

Irwin Shapiro of Lincoln Laboratory publishes preliminary radar measurements confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity. Although Shapiro conceived these radar experiments almost a decade earlier, no radar was sensitive enough to make the proposed measurements until Haystack radar was upgraded in 1966 and could then perform time-of-flight measurements to Venus and Mercury. These measurements are the "fourth test" because Einstein had proposed three experiments that confirmed general relativity to an accuracy of about 10%.

Radar-based lunar studies are performed by Lincoln Laboratory. The use of radar to map the surface of the moon becomes possible when the radar beam is made small enough to discriminate between two points on the surface that would contribute echoes at the same range and Doppler shift. Altitude data is added to the two-dimensional radar reflectivity data by the use of interferometry. In addition, from the strength of radar reflections, it is estimated that the lunar surface has weight-bearing properties similar to that of terrestrial sand.

The 30-story Eastgate tower is completed, offering one- and two-bedroom apartments for students with families. MIT Professor Eduardo Catalano’s design for the reinforced concrete structure includes large glass windows, indoor play and nursery space, and rooftop lounges. One floor of apartments is reserved for Institute visitors, and another is reserved for faculty, but as demand for student housing increases, the faculty apartments are eventually eliminated.

The Materials Science Building (13) is officially dedicated. An integrated research laboratory encompassing a variety of disciplines, including materials science, physics, and engineering, its design reflects the influence of faculty members in these departments. Wider than most MIT buildings (90 ft. instead of 60 ft.), Building 13 has a central service shaft, laboratories clustered around this center, and office and support facilities along the building’s periphery.

MIT establishes a new center for life sciences with the dedication of the Whitaker Building (56). It is constructed on a “floating” slab foundation rather than footings, with the eight-story building’s weight load distributed across the soil below through a reinforced concrete slab. This foundation design is used in many subsequent buildings at MIT in lieu of footings.
